Painting Tutorial B
MATERIALS USED: Photoshop & Wacom tablet
Step 1: Face Outline
- I use the default hard round photoshop brush on 100% opacity and 90% flow.
- I create a massive canvas (3000px x 4000px with a 300pixels/inch resolution).
- To draw the actual face, first sketch a shape roughly the size of a potato.
- Throw in a squashed sideways oval somewhere just below the midline. This is a guideline for the nose.
- Draw a curved line a little less than halfway between the nose and top of your potato. This is a guideline for the eyes.

Step 2: Nose
- Again using the same default brush and using the horizontal oval as a guide, draw in the two nostrils and then the bridge of the nose.
- I highly suggest going off of reference photos at first to familiarize yourself with nose shapes!
Step 3: Eyes
- Throw on two vaguely eye shaped circles along the curved guideline Eyes taper in at the center but come in all different shapes -- again, study some photos!

Step 4: Reassess
- At this point, you should have a cross between a potato and a freaky alien type thing.
- Start to refine the outer border so that you can actually see some features -- if it's a side profile, make sure you draw in the brow bone and the curve of the cheekbone. At this point, I usually erase the top outline of the potato, as it never matches where I actually want the top of the head to be.

Step 5: Hair
- Using curved lines (try to avoid straight/vertical lines if possible!), roughly sketch in the hair. Use large motions (use your wrist!) without focusing on drawing in too many individual strands.

Step 6: Flip Horizontal
- Flip the entire canvas horizontal and check for mistakes. This is a great way to identify any funky anatomy mistakes.
- Here, I fixed one of the eyes and the shoulder. Also, keep an eye out for over large heads. Circled in pink in the second image are the areas I altered.

Step 7: Complete!
- Flip the canvas back (or leave it in the flipped position if you prefer it) and you have your sketch!
